Past presentations:
James Whidden-woodwright and Mathew Cummings-architect have restored some of the most historically significant 17th and 18th century houses still standing on the North Shore. Hear what these experts can teach you about the restoration process, and how they work closely with each client to “do it right.”
Mat and Jim will take you on a virtual tour of a house they recently restored, including:
- An initial walk-through to assess the scope of work and
what could be saved - Documenting its architectural history
- The space use options they discussed with their clients
- Drawings
- Repair details, including the choice of materials and tools
- The construction process itself
A question-and-answer period follows the program.
If you want to receive information about upcoming programs and other news from Jim and Mat, please send an email and you will be added to the private mailing list.

In conjunction with Ipswich architect Mathew Cummings, Jim has
developed an educational program on old house restoration that gives
audiences a rare opportunity
to hear directly from the experts on “how
to do it right” — and to ask questions. The hour-long Powerpoint
presentation addresses every aspect of a restoration project, including
historical documentation, permissions, budget, plans for the use of the
building, drawings, and construction. Mat and Jim also discuss how and
when to
update historical spaces for modern living, or build new
additions that retain traditional styles. Mat and Jim present “Old
House Restoration” at historical societies, museums, and libraries as a
free educational service.
Recent audience comments:
"Restoring these homes to their former glory of simplicity is an incredible undertaking. It is nice to see such passion and the obvious love you have of your work."
"A most enjoyable presentation, filled with information, by two people who love and respect what they do."
